Top Reasons Organizations Partner with an MSP

2020-03-11 11:00

Picture this scenario: an organization’s in-house IT department is swamped with IT requests and is struggling to solve all the issues on time. To add to this, the network is running slow, but the IT team is so occupied with other problems that they're not able to get everything running efficiently in time.

Why Managed Services?

Organizations start looking for help in order to minimize downtime. A managed service provider (MSP) can supplement the day to day IT needs of the organization and free up internal resources to work on more strategic tasks.

Organizations are increasingly partnering with MSPs for the handling of their IT needs through a collaborative arrangement with the internal IT department. Often, organizations may not be the expert in certain technology services, but they’re willing to hire experts who can provide a high-quality service level.

According to CompTIA’s 2016 Buying Guide for Managed Services, 64% of organizations use some form of managed services. The same study also reported that the managed services market is expected to grow to $193 billion by 2020, which is a growth rate of 12.5%.

Why do Organizations choose MSPs?

In the recent past, organizations have become familiar with MSPs and are starting to partner with them for assistance with IT operations, including data storage, backup and recovery, network monitoring, and security.

Cost savings used to be considered the main benefit of MSPs, but customers are now also beginning to realize additional benefits.

Here are the top reasons as stated by CompTIA:

  1. Improved security.
  2. Proactive  approach to IT problems.
  3. Better up-time.
  4. Access to newer technologies.
  5. Cost savings over in-house IT.
  6. Peace of mind.
  7. Free internal staff for strategic work.
  8. Tap into cloud solutions.
  9. Lack of internal IT.
  10. Handle remote office IT.

As the risk of cyberattacks  has been increasing, it is not surprising that security is at the top of the list of MSP benefits.

There was a 38% increase in  cyberattacks in 2014-2015  according to PricewaterhouseCoopers, and 43% of  cyberattacks  reportedly target small businesses, according to Symantec.

Will the MSP replace your in house IT Team?

Organizations worry that hiring an MSP will leave their existing IT team obsolete. However, this is not what data shows.

According to  CompITA,  53% of organizations that use MSPs retained their existing internal IT department, 15% did not have an internal IT department to begin with, and only 6% actually replaced some of their internal IT employees.

Instead, the MSP allows the organization’s internal IT department to focus on more strategic projects that drive business growth and  revenue,  and thus, can keep the department running smoothly.

The following excerpt from an article from  CIO ,  clearly puts across the benefits of  an MSP  to existing IT staff:

“Bringing an MSP into the mix frees up existing IT staff to focus on more strategic projects.
It elevates the IT staff and brings them out of the shadows within the organizations,” says Carolyn April, senior director, Industry Analysis, at CompTIA. “It allows them to focus on a custom app dev project or cloud initiative – something highly strategic. I think that’s a win-win for your IT staff.”
